FLORC Prepares Two Regional Meetings This Week

The Florida Outdoor Recreation Coalition (FLORC) is holding two regional meetings this week. These are important planning meetings to discuss the following agenda items:

Developing the 2013 Open Forum on Outdoor Recreation. This year's theme is “ Building Stronger Clubs and Organizations”

2013 Get Outdoors Florida! – “Improve Whole Health – Get Outdoors, Florida!”

Updates from the 2013 Legislature (not too bad of a year!)

Update on the Florida's Water and Land Legacy Initiative

Plans for a Greater Tallahassee Regional Focus Group on Outdoor Recreation

Coast To Coast Connector a Go - If there is No Governor Veto!

The Florida Legislature has recently approved $50 million to link more than 200 miles of existing bike trails across central Florida. Most of the money for this project would be used to purchase land and easements to fill approximately 72 miles of gaps in existing trails stretching from St. Petersburg to Titusville. Once completed the trail would be the longest continual bike path in Florida.

The Connector is a major priority within the Florida Greenways and Trails System Plan which is being implemented by the Office of Greenways and Trails, and is the keystone project within the Florida Greenways and Trails Foundation’s “Close the Gaps” Campaign.

SportsAbility Promotes “I Can” Attitude

Most people take for granted the things they are able to do in their daily lives. However, most people don’t have limiting physical and/or mental disabilities that impair their enjoyment of being outdoors recreating with family and friends or even by oneself.

Each year the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association (FDOA) holds two SportsAbility events that allow families to get out and participate in recreational activities that many would think would not be possible due to a disability. Most people couldn’t grasp the idea that paraplegic could go waterskiing, but not at SportsAbility. It is just one many activities that people with a disability can master in just one try.

For Outdoor Enthusiast Everyday Should be Earth Day

The late 1960’s was a great time of enlightenment in United States. People were beginning to voice their opinions openly through coordinated marches and demonstrations. If it wasn’t opposition to the Viet Nam War, then it was about civil rights or equal rights for women. Take your pick it was a very load and vocal time, but a very necessary time.

On particular movement that came out of the 1960’s was a greater understanding and appreciation for the environment, home then for some 3.7 billion people (about half of today’s population). Up to this time mother earth was looked upon as a commodity that could be sold and exploited for the good of man with little thought to the sustainability of the earth’s natural resources.

FLORC Endorses Florida's Water and Land Legacy Initiative

After careful consideration over the past few months, the Florida Outdoor Recreation Coalition is endorsing the Florida’s Water and Land Legacy initiative.

FLORC has always been a strong proponent of the Florida Forever program and other land acquisition programs that set aside land for conservation and recreation purposes. We know that in order to have good outdoor recreational experiences and a strong outdoor recreation industry in Florida, we need to have quality land and water resources.
